Installed generating capacity in the GCC is forecasted to reach 170,000MW by 2019 to meet the demand growth, with Saudi Arabia alone having to install at least 4,000MW a year for the foreseeable future
Some 11,000MW of new capacity was commissioned in the GCC in 2010, with Saudi Arabia accounting for half of the total
Saudi Arabia was also the main procurer of new capacity in 2010 awarding contracts for 11,000MW,  equivalent to 75 per cent of the GCC total
The private power market is playing an increasingly important role in the region with some 37,000MW of capacity now contracted from developers in five GCC states
The cost of the new build requirement will be an estimated $66bn, with at least the same amount needed to be invested in T&D infrastructure between 2010-2019
