2012 was an incredibly successful year for MEED’s Qatar Projects conference, fuelled by the success of the FIFA World Cup 2022 bid and the infrastructure projects being announced. The event, supported by the Public Works Authority (Ashghal), Ministry of Business & Trade, Qatar Petroleum Qatari Diar, IBQ and Redco Construction Almana, amongst others, hosted some of the most influential figures in Qatar and attracted a large audience of 482 attendees . Key project industry sectors that were discussed included: upstream and downstream energy projects, electricity and water desalination, the transportation masterplan and mega transport projects, real estate and urban planning development plans, and social infrastructure projects.

Highlights from the 4 day event below:

Eng Nasser Ali al-Mawlawi, President, Public Works Authority (Ashghal) accepted the Qatar Projects 2012 Leadership Award on behalf of The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) at a gala dinner hosted by IBQ on 6 February 2012. Ashghal was presented this award in recognition for its significant achievements in spearheading Qatar’s diverse infrastructure development programme.

Grand Hyatt, Doha, 6 February 2012 :
IBQ MD says Qatar ecomomy will continue to grow robustly
Qatar will continue to be one of the world's fastest-growing economies in 2012, International Bank of Qatar managing director George Nasra told the MEED Qatar Projects Conference in Doha this morning.
He also said that he did not think that Qatar would be significantly affected by the spillover from the Eurozone crisis.
"Real GDP growth is forecast to be at least 5.7 per cent in the year," Nasra said. "Qatar will therefore continue to grow at a rate that is much higher than other countries in the region. The Qatari government is expected to generate a budget surplus of about $75 billion in the next five years," Nasra said
Nasra said that the Qatar government has reserves of $100 billion-150 billion. "On top of that, Qatar has substantial borrowing capacity." Nasra said.
Nasra said that he expected European banks to reduce their lending and sell assets to satisfy new capital adequacy regulations. "But will this affect the financing of Qatar projects?," Nasra said. "Not much. Why? It is because the majority of Qatar projects will be financed by the government."
The MEED Qatar Projects Conference has been organised under the patronage of HE Dr Mohammed al-Sada, Minister of Energy & Industry and Chairman and Managing Director of Qatar Petroleum (QP).

Grand Hyatt, Doha, 5 February 2012:
World Cup to drive 3.7 million tourists annually to Qatar
Secretary General of Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee says number of tourist arrivals expected to grow to between 1.7 and 3.7 million by 2022, up from 900,000 currently

During a speech addressing delegates at the Qatar Projects 2012 conference in Doha, Qatar today (Sunday 5 February) Secretary General of Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee Hassan al-Thawadi commented that one of the main sustainable and economic benefits from the World Cup would be a surge in the region’s tourism.

Al-Thawadi added that the World Cup would contribute 10% growth to the value of the region’s hospitality and tourism sectors and said the event’s committee had studied the success models of previous global sporting events, specifically the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Commenting on the Barcelona Olympics, Al-Thawadi said: “Between 1981 and 1987 for example, the number of tourist arrivals to Barcelona was fairly stagnant at around 700,000. Barcelona’s journey has been an extremely successful one with the city now boasting one of the highest occupancy rates in Europe with approximately 7 million visitors each year.”

Al-Thawadi said the aim of the 2022 World Cup was to bring sustainable social and economic benefit to the Middle East region as a whole. In a reference to the unrest that his affected the region, Al-Thawadi pointed to the diversification of regional economies and job creations with considerable benefits for small-to-medium sized enterprises (SMEs).
