The Middle East and North African rail industry offers some of the most exciting business opportunities in the transportation sector. The six GCC states are planning the development of a world-class integrated rail network designed to carry both passengers and freight.
Each of these countries also have their own national rail plans both planned and underway with many exciting upcoming projects such as Qatar’s Red Line – the first line of the Doha Metro.
The Red Line is part of the $25bn rail plan to be rolled out in Qatar, and with Qatar recently winning the rights to host the 2022 Fifa World Cup, rail development plans are now high on the agenda for transportation stakeholders in Qatar. Doha has committed to building more than $40bn-worth of transport infrastructure.
In Saudi Arabia, development of the Mecca Mass Rail Transit (MMRT) is progressing which consists of 4 lines and will run for about 113 kms around Mecca city centre. It will include approximately 24 stations.
The UAE is one of the region’s most advanced markets in terms of rail schemes. The tender process for the national railway is progressing quickly and according to schedule.
But mega projects such as these come with a myriad of challenges such as interoperability issues, financing and resourcing. MEED’s MENA Rail Projects 2011 conference is designed to provide a critical review of these major projects which will reveal key challenges, insights and business opportunities for the rail industry focused on projects in the MENA region.
This is an ideal chance to meet and network with the key players shaping the future direction of the rail sector. MEED’s conference will bring together the leading regional stakeholders to deliver up-to-the minute information on the current status of region’s major light and heavy railway projects.
