2. Railway boom becoming reality in the Middle East - With governments across the region investing heavily in rail projects, the vision of the early railway pioneers to link cities across the Middle East and beyond is finally being realised.

4. Contractors split into five groups for Doha metro contracts - Qatar Railways Company (Qrail) has placed prequalified contractors for the Doha metro project into four groups to bid for tunnel packages and an additional group to bid for the two major stations planned.
5. Etihad Rail to tender second phase contracts by end of this year - Contractors were invited to prequalify for the contracts late last year. The main works for stage two will be done by four railway design and build infrastructure contracts. It will cover civil works, structures, track works, facilities and utilities.

Iran rail project will involve building a railway line from Gorgan to Gonbad - Iran’s Ministry of Road and Transportation (Mort), in partnership with the Construction & Development of Transportation Infrastructure Company (CDTIC) has invited companies to submit prequalification entries by 1 May for the contract to carry out engineering, procurement, construction (EPC) of the Gorgan to Gonbad railway project.
7. GCC plans to award $30bn of rail contracts in 2012 - Most progress in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and UAE. The GCC is expected to award $30bn-worth of rail contracts In 2012, led by major projects in Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Abu Dhabi begins work on Metro and light-rail design- The Abu Dhabi Department of Transport has started work on the design of a Metro and light-rail transit system after the Executive Council approved funding for the projects, a spokesman for the department said. 5. New Saudi metro to ease Haj traffic- Saudi Arabia's new metro system will ease traffic congestion during the annual Haj pilgrimage, a top official has said. Qatar to finish first phase of railway project by 2020 - Qatar is looking to complete the first phase of its railway project in time for the 2020 Olympics in the event it wins the bid to host the event. The country has been on an accelerated programme to complete its inner city railway project before the upcoming Fifa World Cup 2022 and in time for the 2020 Olympics should its bid win, in order to accommodate the influx of visitors that will descend on the small country during the global events. Funding for Abu Dhabi metro approved - The Abu Dhabi Executive Council has approved funding for a metro and light-rail transit system, the new Abu Dhabi-Dubai road and the Mafraq-Ghuwaifat road to the Saudi border, a spokesman for the Department of Transport said. Click here to read more
